When do portable power stations go on sale?

The discount calendar for solar generators and battery banks, and why the headline percentage on these is worth reading twice.

2 min read

Portable power stations follow a tighter discount calendar than most electronics: the deepest reductions land around Black Friday and Prime Day, with a second tier at spring camping season and end-of-summer clearance. Outside those windows the category runs near-constant mid-size promotions, which is why a “sale” badge on a battery means less here than elsewhere.

The calendar

  • Late November. The floor for the year on most models. Manufacturers clear the outgoing generation alongside it, so the best price is frequently on last year's unit rather than the one being advertised.
  • July. Prime-week pricing pulls the whole category down, including at retailers with nothing to do with Amazon.
  • March to May. Camping and overlanding season. Smaller reductions, but bundles with solar panels appear here and are often better value than the percentage suggests.
  • September. Summer clearance, and the point at which a model about to be replaced starts moving.

Why the percentage misleads in this category

Power stations carry high list prices that are rarely charged. A unit listed at $1,999 and sold at $1,299 for most of the year will still show its saving against the $1,999 — so “35% off” can be the ordinary price wearing a badge.

Judge it on the cash figure and on what the same model cost last month, not on the percentage. Watt-hours per pound of price is the comparison that actually separates two units; the badge is not.

Bundles are where the real reductions hide

Manufacturers protect the headline price of the station itself and discount the panels, the extra battery or the carry case instead. A bundle at 20% off is frequently a better deal than the same station at 30% off on its own, because the panel in the bundle carries most of the reduction.

Stacking a code on top

During the big sale windows most manufacturers disable codes entirely — the sale price is the offer. Between windows is when a code is worth hunting for, and that is also when it is most likely to apply, since the stock is not marked down. The mechanics are in using a code on sale items.

Where to look

The brands running offers in this category are on our category pages, and anything with money already off the price is on products. If you are buying outside a sale window, the code listing is the better starting point.
